  • Telesford is 7th Grenadian athlete to medal in CARIFTA Shot Put
  • First Under‑17 athlete to do so in 12 years, throwing the 5kg shot
  • 8th Grenadian athlete to medal in Under‑17 discus at CARIFTA level

InterCol Junior champion Kazim Telesford continued Grenada’s strong tradition in the throws, capturing 2 silver medals in the Under‑17 Shot Put and Under‑17 Discus Throw at the 2026 CARIFTA Games.

Telesford, the reigning InterCol Junior champion in both the Shot Put and Discus Throw, is also the InterCol Games Junior discus record holder, having established a mark of 53.77 metres earlier this season.

A student of St David Catholic Secondary School, Telesford trains with the St David Track Blazers Track Club, where Paul Phillip, head throws coach and mentor to 2-time World Champion Anderson Peters, oversees the throws programme.

Telesford entered CARIFTA in strong form after throwing 15.72 metres to win gold at InterCol 2026 and 15.80 metres to claim the National Under‑17 title at the ARIZA National Championships, both with the 5kg implement.

In the CARIFTA final, he opened confidently with a 14.76m effort, which placed him in the lead after the first 2 rounds. Third‑round throws from Jafari Shaw (Trinidad and Tobago) and Kamal Armstrong (Barbados) temporarily dropped him to third.

With the field reduced to 8 competitors, Telesford responded decisively in the first round of the final, registering 15.67 metres to move into silver‑medal position. Despite further attempts, he was unable to improve on that mark, finishing second overall behind Armstrong, who secured gold with a 15.96m throw on his final attempt.

The performance made Telesford the 7th Grenadian athlete to medal in the CARIFTA Shot Put, and the first Under‑17 athlete to do so in 12 years, throwing the 5kg shot.

Telesford also claimed silver in the Under‑17 Discus Throw, ending a 10‑year medal drought for Grenada in the age category. He becomes only the 8th Grenadian athlete to medal in the Under‑17 discus at CARIFTA level. With these results, Grenada’s all‑time CARIFTA record in the Under‑17 Shot Put and Discus Throw now stands at 2 gold, 4 silver, and 3 bronze medals across both events.

Telesford is one of just 2 Grenadian athletes to earn multiple individual medals at the 2026 CARIFTA Games, alongside Annalisa Brown, further underlining his impact during the championships. His double‑silver performance confirms his place among the region’s leading young throwers and signals continued promise as Grenada sustains its long‑standing strength in the throwing events.
