The Ministry of Health is reassuring the public that while progress may seem slow on the surface, substantial strides are being made to enhance the delivery of healthcare across the nation.
In a recent statement, the ministry highlighted several key initiatives and improvements that are currently underway:
Human Resource, Training, and Development: Ongoing training programmes for healthcare professionals are being expanded to ensure that nursing and medical staff are equipped with the latest knowledge and skills to address emerging health challenges. So far, 4 nurses have received specialist training in areas of post-basic psychiatric nursing, nephrology nursing, operating room nursing, and intensive care nursing.
In addition, the ministry facilitated the training of 6 doctors over the past few months. The doctors who underwent specialised training in Cuba, Guyana, and Jamaica were trained in orthopaedics, intensive care, and internal medicine.
Just over a week ago, the ministry partnered with the Grenada Medical and Dental Council in facilitating the training of 4 additional doctors attached to the Accident & Emergency Department of The General, Princess Alice, and Princess Royal hospitals in the area of acute trauma and life support.
Enhanced Mosquito Control Measures: In response to the increasing concern over mosquito-borne illnesses, the Ministry has implemented comprehensive mosquito control programmes. These include widespread use of insect repellents, public education campaigns on protective measures, and efforts to eliminate stagnant water where mosquitoes breed.
Improved Healthcare Infrastructure: Significant internal planning is happening for the purpose of upgrading healthcare facilities, ensuring they are equipped and smarted to withstand natural disasters such as cyclones. Major work will begin in 2025.
The ministry has completed the installation of a new roof to the tune of EC$150,000 on the Princess Royal Hospital in Carriacou, which lost its roof 2 months ago during the passage of Hurricane Beryl.
While the ministry is working to restore its full complement of healthcare services on the sister islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique, temporary refurbishments have started on the L’Esterre and Windward medical stations.
Community Health Initiatives: The ministry is actively promoting community health initiatives, including vaccination drives, health screenings, and wellness programmes, aimed at improving overall public health. These include the ongoing dental and community health outreach programmes in Carriacou and on mainland Grenada.
Public Engagement and Education: Through the Health Promotions Department, efforts to engage and educate the public on health matters have intensified. These include campaigns to raise awareness about preventive measures and healthy lifestyle choices, Dengue, Oropouche (sloth fever virus), and Mpox, formerly Monkeypox.
Grenada was one of the first countries in the region to launch its public education campaign on the 2 trending international public health threats.
The journey towards a fully optimised healthcare system is ongoing; these positive strides reflect the ministry’s and Government’s dedication to continuously improving and making it public for all Grenadians.
In this regard, the Ministry of Health remains committed to its mission of providing accessible, high-quality healthcare to all citizens.
