Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell calls for an acceleration of the national and regional digital transformation agenda to improve the competitiveness of enterprises and increase opportunities for citizens, contributing to building more self-reliant economies and greater employment opportunities.

Grenada’s Prime Minister Hon. Dickon Mitchell, Minister of Finance, National Security and Home Affairs, Public Administration, Information, and Disaster Management, while delivering the feature address at the Grenada ICT Week on 28 February on the subject “Business in the digital age: “Accelerating Growth Leading Transformation” announced his intention for Grenada to play a leadership role in digital transformation to improve productivity and competitiveness of enterprises doing business in and with Grenada.

This he stated would support job creation and opportunities for more independent, self-reliant economic development. He said that “it is imperative that business and government agencies embrace digitization as a necessary step to transform our operations and remain competitive regionally and internationally.” Mitchell explained that digital government is a key driving force leading the building of a digital economy and digital society. “People and businesses should be at the center of any digital transformation agenda, and our government is committed to playing a leading role in creating opportunities and supporting growth,” he said.

The PM commended the Grenada Chamber of Industry and Commerce (GCIC) for its role in organising the Grenada ICT Week and challenged them to continue supporting government’s efforts to accelerate digital innovation and modernise the delivery of services by proposing clear roadmaps, goals, and responsibilities.

A highlight of the week of activities was a hands-on technical workshop for schools facilitated by the Caribbean Network Operators Group (CaribNOG), using laptops donated by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). Over 100 students representing 6 local tertiary, secondary and technical schools were trained to build an Internet Service Provider (ISP) network.

PM Mitchell thanked the expert facilitators from CaribNOG and ICANN and encouraged the students to make the most of the training they received. “It is encouraging to see so many of our youngsters embrace technology, not as mere consumers, but as producers, with the energy and creativity necessary to take Grenada and the Caribbean into its digital future.”
