ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Eastern Caribbean Programme of The Nature Conservancy is based out of St George’s, Grenada and includes the 7 countries of Antigua and Barbuda, St Kitts and Nevis, Dominica, St Lucia, Barbados, St Vincent and the Grenadines, and Grenada.
The Director functions as manager and conservation strategist, accountable for the programme’s success in implementing TNC’s conservation approach, producing measurable conservation results, and maintaining organisational values. They ensure outcomes are achieved in priority areas that fall within the operating unit’s responsibilities and contribute intellectual, financial, and/or human resources to the formulation and execution of priority cross-boundary efforts. They support alignment of activities by securing, coordinating, and configuring resources, capacity, and programmes to address the most critical organisation-wide projects, threats, and strategies. Utilising their knowledge and experience of the Eastern Caribbean’s natural systems, culture and societal dynamics, they ensure that strategies and activities of the Programme reflect the geography’s strategic approach and priorities as applicable to that area and are ultimately responsible and accountable for the programmes, partnerships and conservation results in the Eastern Caribbean. They are responsible for collaborating with others on the procurement and application of resources to address the conservation priorities established by TNC, both in the Eastern Caribbean and in areas beyond their span of authority. They demonstrate an affinity for working in a matrixed organisation, building collaborations with other leaders across the Caribbean Division and beyond. They serve as the primary local spokesperson for TNC to internal and external audiences (including staff, volunteers, the Board of Trustees, public and private donors, government agencies and officials, community leaders and other partners) and cultivates those audiences to support and promote TNC’s mission and vision.
The Director supports fundraising and marketing for the Programme, including setting priorities for private and public fundraising goals. They support the Philanthropy team and the Policy & Strategic Programmes team in the cultivation and direct solicitation of donors (private, bilateral, and multilateral government) to meet fundraising goals, and oversee public fundraising efforts specific to the Eastern Caribbean.
The Eastern Caribbean Programme Director reports to the Deputy Director of the Caribbean Division.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree and minimum of 7 years of experience, including experience as a leader in the conservation arena, non-profit sector, advocacy, or related for-profit area
- Working background in marine issues, coastal management, and planning and/or climate adaptation in the Caribbean
- Demonstrated experience influencing, developing, and implementing conservation policy and plans
- Experience writing public and private grant proposals
- Experience managing complex or multiple projects, including managing finances and coordinating the work of other professionals and partners
- Experience in leading and managing a large multi-disciplinary team
- Fluency in English, with both oral and written language proficiency that supports high impact conversations and presentations
- Experience communicating with and presenting to diverse audiences including donors, board members, employees, outside partners, or equivalent
- Experience in fundraising and budget management
