CIBC FirstCaribbean is pleased to once again be title sponsor of the Grenada Amateur Swimming Association Inter-Primary School competition, having sponsored the event for the previous five years in conjunction with the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Religious Affairs.

The ministry was represented by Bruce Swan, Assistant Coordinator of Sports and Jazelle Sylvester, Communications & Marketing Officer.

As anticipated, the activity around the pool was all energy, excitement and lots of noise, as children from 7-11 years prepared for their events. Carlton Simon, Grenada’s National Swim Coach said he was, “delighted at the 292 participants registered, an increase of approximately 50 children. That kind of interest at these young ages is good news for the sport in Grenada.”

Spirits were high as the event opened and the children got ready to compete for medal positions. Organised in three different age categories: 8 and under, 9-10 years, and 11 and over, the young sports persons took part in different swim events including the freestyle, breast stroke, butterfly and backstroke, all in the hope of getting a medal and possibly setting a new record.

At the prizegiving ceremony, the pool area was noisy with cheers of encouragement and shouts of congratulations from the children and supporting parents. Nigel Ollivierre, Country Manager for CIBC FirstCaribbean and Vice President of the Grenada Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) presented trophies to the overall category winners, and medals to those placing 2nd and 3rd. He said, “We must take the time to acknowledge the sacrifices made by parents, schools and coaches, which allowed for the children to participate in an event such as this. We are grateful and proud to be able to support the ministry and GASA in this endeavour.”
