Nawasa to implement Southern St George’s Water Supply Expansion Project

The National Water and Sewerage Authority (Nawasa) is on the verge of implementing the long-anticipated Southern St George’s Water Supply Expansion Project — a transformative initiative designed to significantly enhance water service delivery for thousands of residents, including those in the Concord community.

This project marks a major milestone in Grenada’s water sector and stands as a beacon of hope and resilience, arriving at a crucial time when the island faces the growing threats of climate change. In the face of rising sea levels, increasingly severe weather patterns, and environmental shifts, this initiative offers not just infrastructure improvements, but a renewed lifeline for residents and businesses, especially those within our critical tourism belt from Concord to the southern tip of the island.

For residents in these areas, the project promises improved access to safe, reliable water, upgraded sewerage disposal systems and strengthened climate resilience across key infrastructure. Beyond the tangible improvements, the project reinforces Nawasa’s commitment to the well-being and prosperity of the Grenadian people, promoting a more secure, sustainable, and economically vibrant future for all.

A historic development for Concord

In addition to the water-related enhancements, certain areas within the community of Concord which did not previously have an electricity supply will benefit from access to this service. Through this project, that long-standing gap will finally be addressed, ushering in a new chapter of opportunity and equity for the area.

Ongoing community engagement

Over the past year, Nawasa has conducted multiple consultations with Concord residents to sensitise them to the project’s scope, timeline, and environmental and social impacts. As implementation draws near, Nawasa recognises the continued need for engagement and transparency. We acknowledge that residents are seeking further clarification on certain aspects of the project, and as a responsible corporate citizen, we are committed to addressing these queries in the days ahead.

Project scope and details

Funded under the UK Caribbean Infrastructure Partnership Fund (UKCIF) and executed in collaboration with the Government of Grenada and the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), this project is not merely a construction endeavour. It is an investment in national resilience, future-readiness, and sustainable development.

Infrastructure Works — Lot 1: Concord to St George’s

• Repair of the existing dam (weir) on the Black Bay River
• Upgrade of the Concord Water Treatment Plant to increase output from approximately 600,000 gallons to 1,000,000 gallons per day
• Construction of 2 new potable water storage tanks, totalling 500,000 gallons
• Upgrade/repair of nearly 2 miles of water mains
• Installation of meteorological and hydraulic measurement and control devices

Infrastructure Works — Lot 2: St George’s to Point Salines

• Upgrade/repair of approximately 7 miles of water mains
• Upgrade/repair of approximately 1.25 miles of sewer mains
• Upgrade of 3 sewer lift stations

The project is governed by a comprehensive Environmental and Social Management Plan, which outlines measures to mitigate adverse impacts while maximising benefits for affected communities and the natural environment.
