Grenada’s Influenza A-H1N1 cases now stands at three, as reports from the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) reference laboratory indicate that the country has recorded another two cases.
The Ministry of Health today confirmed to the Government Information Service (GIS) that it had received the confirmation notice from the Trinidad based (CARPHA) about the two positive samples.
Chief Medical Officer (CMO) in the Ministry of Health, Dr. George Mitchell said since the first confirmed case on November 5, several samples were sent for testing and they all returned negative.
However, Mitchell said in its latest batch of samples sent for analysis a few days ago, two returned positive. According to the CMO, while the rate of infection has dropped steadily throughout the region, his staff will keep the tempo up and do what is necessary and practical in the public’s interest.
Seasonal influenza can cause mild to severe illness and at times can lead to death. It is characterized by symptoms such as a sudden high fever, cough (usually dry), headache, muscle and joint pain, severe malaise (feeling unwell), sore throat and runny nose.
Meanwhile, with the Christmas Season fast approaching, the Health Ministry is appealing to the public for individuals to take responsibility for the health and limit the spread of diseases by practicing proper hygiene.
