Firearm Licensing Fee Reduced

The House of Representatives on Tuesday approved a resolution to reduce the fee to license a firearm, and it is the hope of Government that this will result in increased compliance among licensed firearm owners.

Presented by Member of Parliament for St Patrick West Anthony Boatswain, he explained to the House that the new format will provide owners of licensed firearms the option to renew every 1, 2, or 5 years.

He reminded the House that last year Government approved increased fees, and from all indications there was reduced compliance among firearm owners whose licenses gives them the authority to carry a firearm at all times. That increase had moved the licence from EC$100 to $500.

The new fee will see a reduction to $300, with a 2-year option of $500. The 5-year license will be $1,350. It was stated that those who already paid should hold on to receipts, as it will cover them for 2017.

Minister for National Security, Prime Minister Dr the Hon. Keith Mitchell said that based on the licensing done in 2015, there was significant reduction in compliance, and he believes that the new reduced fees will see more firearm owners licensing them in 2016. “We therefore hope to have more revenue this year than we had last year,” he told the Parliament.

No changes were made to the farmers and specific place licenses which are $150 annually; $250 for a 2-year license; and $500 for a 5-year license.
