It is with profound sadness that we extend heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of the Republic of Suriname on the passing of its former president, His Excellency Chandrikapersad Santokhi.
President Santokhi will be remembered as a dedicated public servant and a principled regional leader who strongly believed in the power of cooperation and collective Caribbean action. His tenure in public life was marked by service, integrity, and a deep commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and regional partnerships.
As Chairman of the Caribbean Community (Caricom), a position he held from July to December 2022, President Santokhi provided steady and purposeful leadership during a period of global uncertainty. Under his chairmanship, he consistently championed Caribbean unity, emphasised regional resilience, and advocated for collective responses to shared challenges, including climate change, food and nutrition security, sustainable development, and economic recovery. His guiding vision underscored the enduring principle that the Caribbean is strongest when it moves forward together.
He often reminded the community that progress is achieved not in isolation, but through partnership and shared responsibility — an approach that deepened dialogue among Member States and reinforced the foundations of regional integration.
On behalf of the Government and people of Grenada, I extend our sincere sympathies to his family, friends, colleagues, and to all those across Suriname and the wider Caribbean who mourn his loss.
May the legacy of President Santokhi’s leadership, service, and commitment to Caribbean unity continue to inspire present and future generations.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
