Jamora Alves smashed her Grenadian national senior record in the women’s discus throw at the NCAA Division I East First Round in Lexington, Kentucky. The Carriacou native, presently competing for St John’s University, produced a stellar 57.56 metres throw to improve upon her previous national senior record of 55.89 metres and finish 3rd overall on Saturday, 30 May 2026.
Her performance this weekend continues an exceptional collegiate career for Alves, who has cemented herself as one of the most decorated athletes in St John’s programme history. In 2025, she decimated a 43-year-old school record in the shot put. In 2026, she shattered a 28-year-old school record in the discus to complete a standout showing at the Big East Championships, where she captured both the women’s shot put and discus titles. Those performances earned her the women’s Most Outstanding Field Performer honours and marked her second career outdoor shotput title. In total, she now holds 9 individual titles, the most in her university’s history. Her exceptional year was also recognised at home by the St John’s Athletic Department, where she was named the Indoor Track and Field MVP during their 79th Annual Awards Celebration.
With this weekend’s result, Alves has safely secured her place at the 2026 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, scheduled for 10–13 June. This will mark the third career appearance at the prestigious NCAA National Finals for the Grenadian standout, who previously competed in 2023 (placing 22nd overall with 50.08m) and in 2025 (placing 19th with a 52.70m best throw).
On the international ladder, Alves’ metrics reinforce her steady progression. She is currently ranked 1st in the OECS sub-region, 10th in the CAC region, 14th in the Commonwealth, 31st in the NACAC region, and 81st in the world. With these standings, she makes a definitive case for selection to the Grenadian lineup for upcoming regional and international competitions, having last represented Grenada at the 2025 Pan American Junior Championships.
Reflecting on her journey as a graduating senior in a moving social media post, Alves expressed deep gratitude for the path that brought her from the sister isle to the pinnacle of US collegiate athletics. “They’ll see the medals, the records, and the NCAA appearances, but they’ll never fully see the sacrifices it took to get here,” Alves shared. “Being a student-athlete taught me strength beyond the throwing circle. From Grenada to the NCAA stage, I carried not only my dreams, but the dreams of everyone who believed in me.”
As a member of the collegiate Class of 2026, Alves moves on to the US national finals in Oregon not only holding the highest athletic accolades for the Spice Isle in her discipline, but as a premier ambassador for Grenadian sport on the international stage.
