After NMFS grants fisheries comparability findings

The Government of Grenada welcomes the decision by the United States National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), confirming that Grenada’s fisheries management measures are comparable in effectiveness to those required under the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) for designated commercial fisheries, resulting in the restoration of access to the United States market for Grenadian fish and fish products.

In a notice published in the US Federal Register, NMFS announced that Grenada’s fisheries management measures achieve outcomes comparable in effectiveness to those required under the MMPA and has therefore granted comparability findings for the affected fisheries. This determination restores Grenada’s eligibility to export fish and fish products from these fisheries to the United States, following the publication of the NMFS notice in the US Federal Register on 16 March 2026.

The determination applies to Grenada Fishery IDs 1251, 1252, 1253, 1258, and 12603, which were subject to the comparability review process following the September 2025 MMPA determinations issued under the US Marine Mammal Protection Act import provisions.

Following a period of national engagement to strengthen Grenada’s fisheries regulatory framework and monitoring systems, NMFS has confirmed that Grenada’s measures achieve outcomes comparable in effectiveness to those required under the US MMPA for the protection of marine mammals.

The Government recognises the collaborative efforts of national fisheries authorities, technical officers, industry stakeholders, and international partners whose work supported this outcome and strengthened Grenada’s fisheries management systems in line with international conservation standards. This determination reflects Grenada’s continued commitment to responsible fisheries management, marine conservation, and the sustainable use of ocean resources.

The restoration of access to the United States market represents an important step in safeguarding the livelihoods of Grenadian fishers, processors, and exporters while reinforcing confidence in Grenada’s fisheries governance and regulatory systems.

The comparability findings will remain in effect until December 31, 2029, subject to ongoing compliance with the requirements of the MMPA import provisions.

The Government will continue working closely with national stakeholders and international partners to ensure that Grenada’s fisheries management systems remain aligned with international conservation standards and the ongoing requirements of the Marine Mammal Protection Act.

The Government reaffirms its commitment to strengthening fisheries governance, protecting marine biodiversity, and supporting the stability and growth of Grenada’s fisheries sector.
