“The Radar Request: Sovereignty and Vulnerability in the Caribbean” is the focus of the 21st Sir Archibald Nedd Memorial Lecture (SANML) to be held at the Radisson Convention Centre (Grand Anse) on Tuesday, 9 December 2025, starting 6 pm.
Delivering this year’s timely and important lecture is distinguished Professor Ivelaw Griffith, a former Senior Associate of the Centre for Strategic and International Studies and a Fellow of the Caribbean Policy Consortium. Professor Griffith, the author of 11 books, is the recipient of the 2015 Perry Award for Excellence in Security and Defence Education, named in honour of former US Defence Secretary Dr William Perry. A national of Guyana, Professor Griffith is the first person from the Caribbean to receive this honour.
A former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Guyana, Professor Griffith is also the recipient of the Cacique Crown of Honour, Guyana’s third highest national award, for Excellence in International Scholarship and Transformational Education Leadership.
This year’s topic was chosen against the background of the recent request by the United States to set up radar facilities at the Maurice Bishop International Airport (MBIA), the mounting US military presence in the region, and the loud calls throughout the region for the Caribbean to remain a Zone of Peace — all hotly debated issues locally, regionally and internationally.
The annual SANML, started in 1996, is the premier annual public lecture of the Grenada Bar Association, focusing on current topics of public interest. It fulfills an essential part of the Bar’s mission to provide continuing public legal education. Members of the public are all invited to attend the 9 December Lecture.
The SANML is the longest-running public lecture series of any Bar Association in the 56-nation Commonwealth. It was named after former Chief Justice of Grenada Sir Archibald Nedd (1979–1986).
