Governor-General Dame Cecile La Grenade will on 18 November 2025 accept the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) new designated ambassador to Grenada in a ceremony at her residence in Point Salines.
“The Ambassador-designate of the United Arab Emirates to Grenada, His Excellency Mr Mohamed Issa Abushahab, is scheduled to present his Letters of Credence to Her Excellency Dame Cecile La Grenade, GCMG, OBE, PhD, at her residence,” said an invitation to the media from the Government Information Service (GIS).
Currently, the designated Ambassador is the Permanent Representative of the United Arab Emirates to the United Nations (UN). In this role, he serves as the UAE’s primary ambassador to the UN, participating in key discussions and negotiations on international affairs, peace, and security.
He presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General António Guterres in April 2024. He replaced Lana Nusseibeh, who served as the UAE’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations as well as the non-resident ambassador to Grenada. The former ambassador presented her credentials in 2017 to the Governor-General.
Grenada and the United Arab Emirates established diplomatic relations in 1975. In June 2020, Grenada became the first Caricom member to open a consulate in the UAE. The UAE has provided grants to Grenada, notably contributing to the reconstruction of Grenada’s Parliament building. It also funded the Limlair Solar PV Hybrid project in Carriacou through the UAE-Caribbean Renewable Energy fund.
Founded in 1971, the UAE is a federation of 7 emirates located in Western Asia, bordering Oman and Saudi Arabia. Its capital is Abu Dhabi, and the emirates are Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, and Fujairah.
Several UAE nationals are also citizens of Grenada through the Citizenship by Investment (CBI) Programme, according to data published by the Investment Migration Agency (IMA).
