- Grenada Bureau of Standards is sole government agency responsible for standards approvals and enforcement
- Two standards are up for public comment on establishing national standards for toilet tissue and hollow blocks
- National standard for alcohol-based hand sanitiser came into effect on 6 October
As of 6 October 2025, the national standard for alcohol-based hand sanitiser came into effect according to a notice published in the 3 October edition of the weekly Government Gazette.
“This standard was developed to establish minimum requirements for alcohol-based hand sanitisers, ensuring that the product is both safe and effective,” said the notice, which listed the standard number as GDS 145: 2025 (CRS 76:2023).
It is a voluntary standard, adopted from the CROSQ Standard CRS 76:2023, and outlines the chemical and labelling requirements for alcohol-based hand sanitisers. “This standard applies specifically to over-the-counter alcohol-based hand sanitisers,” said the summary information about the standard.
It does not apply to non-alcohol-based hand sanitisers, medical-grade hand sanitisers and hand sanitisers intended for surgical use. The Grenada Bureau of Standards is the sole government agency responsible for standards approvals and enforcement.
A standard is a document that provides requirements, specifications, guidelines or characteristics that can be used consistently to ensure that materials, products, processes and services are fit for their purpose. Types of standards include methods of manufacturing, methods of designing, methods of drawing, methods of using, or methods of operation of safety conditions of production and methods of testing, analysing, appraising, verifying, or measuring.
There are several voluntary and mandatory standards in Grenada. An important part of declaring a standard is receiving comments from the public, and currently, the Bureau of Standards has two standards up for public comment.
The Grenada Bureau of Standards is in the final stage of establishing national standards for toilet tissue and hollow blocks and wants the public to provide comments on the updated standards from 6 October to 5 December 2025. The draft standards will replace the mandatory standards which already exist for these products.
