As Presiding Officers of the Parliament of Grenada, we join with Parliaments and parliamentary organisations across the globe in commemorating World Parliament Day 2025.

This day reminds us of the vital role that Parliaments play in upholding democracy, ensuring accountability, and representing the voice and will of the people. In an increasingly complex global environment, the work of Parliaments has never been more essential. It is through our democratic institutions that national aspirations are debated, laws are enacted, and the rights of citizens are protected.

Here in Grenada, we mark this occasion in the context of 51 years of parliamentary democracy, a journey that began with the attainment of Independence in 1974. Our Parliament, comprising the elected House of Representatives and the appointed Senate, has since served as the cornerstone of our constitutional democracy. Over the past 5 decades, Parliament has stood as a forum for robust debate, legislative progress, and the peaceful resolution of political differences. With moments of socio-political experiment such as the turn to popular direct democracy in the early years of our independence, this institution of representative democracy continued to evolve. The Grenada democracy has always reflected the resilience of the Grenadian people and our enduring commitment to indigenous governance.

Our Parliament remains steadfast in its mission to deepen democratic norms, strengthen transparency, and advance inclusive decision-making. As we reflect on our 5 decades of achievements and challenges, we renew our dedication to fostering a Parliament that is representative, responsive, and accessible to all citizens, especially our women and youth, whose engagement is crucial for a sustainable democracy.

This year’s observance invites us to consider how parliaments can adapt and innovate to remain effective and resilient in the face of social, economic, political and environmental pressures.  We celebrate a 32% women’s presence in the Lower House and in the senate, and a female President in the Senate.  The Grenada Women’s Parliamentary Caucus engages all current and past female parliamentarians. Though in smaller numbers, youth presence is rising in both houses. The attachment of 17 elected youth parliamentarians to this institution, positions the next generation for leadership.

We take this opportunity to express our appreciation to all Members of Parliament, past and present, staff of the Houses of Parliament, civil society, academia and the general public, whose collaboration and scrutiny help keep our institution strong, engaged and relevant.

On this World Parliament Day, we reaffirm our collective commitment to the ideals of representative governance, to strengthening parliamentary institutions, and to building a future where democracy thrives and every voice from the people counts.  May our Parliament continue to be a beacon of dignity, national ambition, respectful deliberation and democratic progress.

Sen. the Hon. Dr Dessima Williams                                    Hon. Leo Cato
