Roxie McLeish-Hutchinson, Permanent Secretary with Responsibility for Foreign Affairs, is currently in Geneva representing Grenada at the 49th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Working Group Session.
Grenada’s National Report will be presented on Monday, 5 May 2025, during the official review, with the UPR working sessions continuing through to Friday, 9 May 2025.
The Universal Periodic Review is a distinctive mechanism of the Human Rights Council that facilitates a peer review of the human rights records of all United Nations Member States. It serves as a platform for countries to demonstrate the progress they have made in upholding human rights and addressing the challenges they continue to face. Grenada’s participation reflects its enduring commitment to advancing human rights, in accordance with its constitutional principles and international obligations.
As one of the countries scheduled to present during this cycle, Grenada’s report highlights the nation’s ongoing commitment to strengthening its human rights framework, outlining key legislative reforms, policy initiatives, and institutional advancements made since its last review in 2020. Special attention is given to developments in the areas of access to justice, the protection of vulnerable groups, gender equality, children’s rights, and the rights of persons with disabilities. The report also acknowledges the country’s limitations as a small island developing state and outlines strategic priorities to address existing gaps and build institutional resilience.
Following the presentation, the Human Rights Council will issue an outcome report containing the recommendations made by member states. Grenada will review and respond to these recommendations as part of its continued engagement with the international human rights system. This process ensures transparency, accountability, and ongoing dialogue with global partners and stakeholders.
