The Grenada Food and Nutrition Council’s (GFNC) first of two Supermarket Sweeps took place on Wednesday, 7 May 2025, at Kalico Supermarket in Grenville, St Andrew, with a high-energy competition that put participants’ nutrition and label-reading knowledge to the test.
Selected from among attendees of a recent GFNC-led supermarket tour, the competing mothers had just 5 minutes to navigate the aisles and select grocery items based on randomly selected nutrition scenarios — all while staying under a $150 budget.
The scenarios required thoughtful meal planning to meet specific dietary needs:
- A children’s birthday party featuring high-fibre finger foods, low in added sugars, sodium, and saturated fats
- A wellness lunch for adults with high blood pressure, emphasising low sodium, low saturated fat, and minimal added sugars
- A vegetarian breakfast spread for a morning worship event, with a focus on high fibre and low added sugars and saturated fats

Wendy Adlam, Executive Secretary of the GFNC, opened the event by outlining the rules and emphasising the challenge’s value in promoting everyday nutrition literacy.
Competitors were judged by Betty Ann Francois, GFNC Nutrition Officer for St Patrick and Assistant to the Product Development Training Officer (PDTO), and Keishon Williams, GFNC Nutritionist for St John and St Mark. Judging criteria included:
- Healthy food choices
- Budget management
- Accurate nutrition label reading and application
- Adherence to food-based dietary guidelines
- Time efficiency

Winners of the 2025 Supermarket Sweep were:
- 1st Place Carona Mitchell: $400 gift voucher and gift bag
- 2nd Place Roselyn Thomas: $200 gift voucher and gift bag
- 3rd Place Roxanne Thomas: $200 gift voucher
The GFNC congratulates all participants for showing that healthy shopping can be both strategic and fun. As part of its mission, the GFNC continues to promote the health and well-being of the Grenadian population by encouraging informed food choices and healthy lifestyles.
Special thanks to Kalico Supermarket for hosting this free educational event and supporting the Council’s efforts to advance nutrition education.
