  • In 2024 revenue earned through trademarks was EC$508,336
  • Trademarking a product or a service in Grenada will only be recognised in Grenada
  • Madrid Protocol is an international treaty that allows trademark owners to register their mark in multiple countries with one application

Several stakeholders who will be directly affected when Grenada becomes a signatory to the Madrid Protocol recently had the opportunity to learn more about this international trademark agreement with representatives from the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO).

Two high-level experts from the organisation recently met with stakeholders to prepare for Grenada’s move to introduce the Madrid Protocol through the Corporate Affairs and Intellectual Property Office (CAIPO).

The Madrid Protocol is an international treaty that allows trademark owners to register their mark in multiple countries with one application. As it stands right now, trademarking a product or a service in Grenada will only be recognised in Grenada, but if it is trademarked through the Madrid Protocol, it will be recognised by all countries who have signed onto that protocol.

Debbie Roenning, Director, Madrid Legal Division, Madrid Registry, Brands and Designs Sector, and Roger Holberton, Deputy Director Madrid Information Systems Division (MISD) and Head, Business Application Architecture Section, MISD, Information and Communication Technology Department, Administration, Finance and Management Sector, WIPO spent the week of 21–24 January 2025 meeting with stakeholders as part of the preparation.

The final activity was a stakeholder workshop at the Public Workers Union (PWU) conference room where there was a representative from the Grenada Bar Association, Grenada Chamber of Industry and Commerce, Grenada Office of Creative Affairs.

Besides the stakeholders, the WIPO officials meet with representatives from the Finance and Legal Affairs ministries. Trademark through CAIPO is a significant revenue earner for Government; in 2024, revenue earned was EC$508,336.

Useless article. What countries are actually governed by this Protocol is the real question.
