The National Sports Council held its inaugural board meeting at the Kirani James Athletic Stadium on Tuesday, 10 December 2024, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s efforts to enhance the development of sports and empower athletes across all disciplines.
Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon. Delma Thomas, who addressed the newly appointed members of the National Sports Council, commended their dedication to advancing sports in Grenada. The minister expressed the government of Grenada’s unwavering support for the council’s mission, emphasising the critical role sports play in community development, promoting health and wellness, and elevating the nation’s international profile.
“This Council represents a new era of collaboration and innovation in Grenadian sports. The government stands firmly behind you, providing resources, guidance, and support to ensure that our priority areas for grassroots development at the primary and secondary schools and the community happen,” stated Hon. Delma Thomas. She also pledged her commitment to working closely with the Council to overcome challenges and achieve meaningful progress.
Additionally, the Sports Minister vowed to rehabilitate the playing fields and other sports facilities damaged by Hurricane Beryl while expressing to the delegation from Carriacou and Petite Martinique how important the sister islands are to her.
The Council reviewed its mandate, which includes the following:
- Developing strategic initiatives to promote grassroots participation in sports at the parish level
- Providing support and infrastructure for the parish council
- Strengthening partnerships with federations and other sporting bodies in Grenada
The members committed themselves and their parish councils to improve the governance and management of their councils to expand opportunities for Grenadian athletes.
Chairperson of the Council, Patrick Simmons, expressed gratitude for the government’s support and reaffirmed the board’s commitment to achieving tangible results. He remarked, “We are excited to embark on this journey to transform the sports landscape in Grenada with the government’s backing and the collective expertise of this council. We are confident in our ability to drive change and inspire a new generation of athletes”.
The National Sports Council invites all stakeholders, including athletes, coaches, and community members, to collaborate in advancing the country’s sports agenda. Together, we can create a dynamic and transformative sports culture that reflects the true spirit of Grenada.

About the National Sports Council:
The National Sports Council of Grenada is governed by an Act of Parliament, Act 2 of 2012, and commenced on 7 November 2023. The Cabinet of Ministers appointed the 11-member Board of Directors on 23 September 2024. The Chair of each Parish Council is a member of the Board. The other two are the Chief Education Officer (CEO) and the Coordinator of Sports (CoS). The Minister appoints the Chair and Deputy Chair.
