by Grenada Food and Nutrition Council
As 2024 comes to a close, the Grenada Food and Nutrition Council (GFNC) proudly reflects on a year of impactful initiatives and remarkable achievements.
With a team of 13 dedicated staff members, including Executive Secretary Lydia Browne, and oversight from a board of 10 members chaired by Gemma Bain-Thomas, GFNC continues to advance its mission: to promote the health and well-being of the Grenadian population by encouraging informed food choices and healthy lifestyles.
This year, GFNC strengthened partnerships to extend its reach and deepen its impact. Collaborations included:
- The Ministry of Mental Health and Wellness for organising a health drive-thru
- The National Chronic Non-Communicable Disease Commission, initiating outreach efforts in schools to create healthier environments for students
- The University of the Southern Caribbean, launching a comprehensive diet study across Grenada, Carriacou, and Petite Martinique
Each parish in Grenada, including Carriacou and Petite Martinique, benefits from an assigned nutritionist who works directly with the community, supported by specialised roles such as the Product Development and Training Officer, Administrative Officer, Accounts Clerk, Secretary, and Communications personnel. Together, this team has demonstrated unwavering commitment to empowering individuals and fostering healthier communities.
Take a moment to listen to the voices of some of the nutritionists as they reflect on their service at GFNC:
- Masha Benjamin-Hunte: Nutritionist, St David and South St George
- Keishon Williams: Nutritionist, St John and St Mark
- Charisse Bristol: Nutrition Education and Promotion Coordinator
To connect with Grenadians online and in person, GFNC leveraged digital platforms and grassroots initiatives. Sharing 152 social media posts, the council garnered over 14,000 views on TikTok, and 42,800 views on Facebook, and Instagram plus rebuilding YouTube. Simultaneously, the team’s nutritionists worked with 380 clients — including 303 new individuals — while community outreach programmes educated more than 1,400 Grenadians on vital nutrition topics, bridging the gap between information and action.
Additionally, competition was a key feature of 2024, with GFNC’s nutrition quizzes engaging schools nationwide. Students showcased their enthusiasm and knowledge of healthy choices, with Limes Mennonite and Bishop’s College emerging as champions. Such initiatives not only educate but also inspire a culture of health-conscious living among Grenada’s youth.
GFNC’s unwavering dedication to improving the health and well-being of Grenadians shines through its 2024 achievements. By combining innovative outreach programmes, strategic collaborations, and personalised support, the council continues to empower individuals and communities to lead healthier lives. Working alongside the Ministry of Agriculture, we work toward ensuring food security for every Grenadian and promote sustainable practices. With the momentum of 2024 behind us, GFNC looks forward to an even more impactful 2025. Together, we are making strides toward a healthier Grenada, one informed food choice at a time.
