Construction has officially commenced on the Victoria School for Special Education, a critical project aimed at fostering inclusive education and addressing the needs of students requiring specialised support.
The project, which began on 1 October 2024, represents a significant investment in Grenada’s education sector, with a budget of US$700,000.
The reconstruction, spearheaded by H Lewis Construction Ltd, will include the addition of modern facilities designed to create an enriching and accommodating learning environment. These facilities include 4 classrooms, a staffroom, male and female washrooms, a sick bay, a principal’s office, an arts and crafts room, a sensory gym, a counselling room, a kitchen, and a lunchroom. The construction is funded jointly by the Caribbean Development Bank’s Basic Needs Trust Fund (BNTF) and the Government of Grenada and is projected to be completed within 8 months.
“We are pleased that the BNTF is contributing to an improved educational facility for the students and teachers at the Victoria School. As the Caribbean Development Bank’s leading Poverty Reduction Programme, projects under our education portfolio are a key part of how the BNTF is fulfilling its mandate in Grenada,” said Monique Noel, Project Manager of the BNTF in Grenada.
The initiative underscores the Government’s commitment to inclusive education, ensuring every child, regardless of ability, has access to quality learning opportunities. The Victoria School for Special Education will significantly enhance the educational experience for its beneficiaries by providing tailored resources and spaces that cater to their unique needs.
“This project is a major step toward creating a more inclusive society,” said a spokesperson for the Ministry of Education. “By equipping the school with these specialised facilities, we are not only addressing the immediate needs of our students but also demonstrating our commitment to equal opportunities for all.”
The sensory gym and arts and crafts room highlight the focus on holistic development, offering spaces for creative expression and sensory integration that are vital for students with specific challenges. Furthermore, the inclusion of counselling rooms and accessible facilities ensures comprehensive support for both students and staff.
The Victoria School for Special Education represents a transformative milestone in Grenada’s efforts to build an education system that leaves no one behind. Upon completion, it will stand as a testament to the power of collaboration between local and regional stakeholders in advancing the rights and opportunities of children with special needs.
