  • Lyvon Date alias “Magic” escaped police custody on 21 February
  • Capital murder charge escapee recaptured and presently at The General Hospital
  • Joel Joseph will be charged with harbouring criminal

Police have confirmed that a prisoner who escaped lawful custody on 21 February while making an appearance at the Grenville Magistrate Court on a capital murder charge has been recaptured and is presently a patient at The General Hospital.

“Lyvon Date, alias ‘Magic’ of Griffin Lane, St Andrew, who escaped police custody on 21 February 2024, has been recaptured by members of the Royal Grenada Police Force this morning, about 1:40 am, during a sting operation that commenced in St David and ended in St Andrew,” said a news release issued by the Community Relations Department of the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF).

Without providing details about these injuries, the release confirmed that Date was found with injuries and taken to The General Hospital for medical attention, where a healthcare provider admitted him as a patient.

2 weeks following his escape, the police issued a reward of EC$5,000 for his recapture. It is not known if the reward assisted with the recapture.

Police also confirmed that Joel Joseph, 36 years, farmer of Tuilleries, St Andrew, found in the company of Date, was arrested and will be charged with harbouring a criminal.

The Criminal Code states, “Whoever, knowing or having reason to believe that any person has committed or has been convicted of any crime, aids, conceals or harbours the person, with the purpose of enabling him or her to avoid lawful arrest, or the execution of his or her sentence, shall, if the crime is punishable with death or with imprisonment for 10 years or upwards, be liable to imprisonment for 5 years, or shall, if the crime is a felony other than aforesaid, be liable to imprisonment for 2 years, or shall, if the crime is a misdemeanour, be liable to imprisonment for 6 months.”

Capital murder is punishable by death.

“The Royal Grenada Police Force expresses profound gratitude to the general public and the media for their efforts in assisting the RGPF in recapturing Mr Date. Special thanks must also be given to the men and women of the RGPF who have mounted numerous operations day and night towards this effort,” said the release, which assured the public that the RGPF is committed to maintaining the peace and tranquillity of our nation.
