Major improvement work is being planned for the Dumfries Landfill in Carriacou. This includes new operating standards and equipment, similar to what is presently at the Perseverance Landfill in Grenada.

Supervisor at the landfill Kevon Clarke said a new office complex to aid in the efficient and effective operations of the landfill is also to be constructed at Dumfries.

Clarke made the comments during a tour of the area with a team that included Minister for Climate Resilience, the Environment and Renewable Energy, Hon. Kerryne James; Permanent Secretary Merina Jessamy; and Project Officer within the National Ozone Unit, Leslie Smith.

Understanding the important role landfills play in the proper disposal of waste by reducing the amount of waste that makes it into the environment, Minister James expressed her satisfaction with the work being done here by Clarke and his team.

After many years of complaints by farmers and residents in the area, the Dumfries Landfill is being fenced. Minister James, noting that this was a burning issue raised by Minister for Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs and Local Government Hon. Tevin Andrews during the elections campaign, said she was happy to see the work has started.

Meanwhile, the waste disposal colour-coded bin project will soon be launched in Carriacou and Petite Martinique.
