  • OAS has sent an observer election mission for every election in recent history
  • Caricom has also sent observer missions
  • 87,794 individuals are currently registered to vote

Press Secretary Philomena Robertson has confirmed that Grenada has sent requests through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to 3 institutions that are known to conduct General Elections observations.

Two have responded in the affirmative to send election observer missions for the 23 June 2022 General Election.

“Yes, requests have been sent,” she said when asked via text message if Grenada will be requesting election observer mission team(s) for the upcoming general election. She further confirmed that requests were sent to the OAS, Caricom, and the Carter Centre. Government is awaiting a response from the Carter Center. The OAS and Caricom have accepted the request and will be sending the observer missions.

The OAS has sent an observer election mission for every election in recent history and, in its report, recurring recommendations such as the implementation of campaign laws and compliance to the People’s Representation Act. Caricom has also sent observer missions for the general elections in the past.

The Carter Center is a non-governmental, not-for-profit organisation founded in 1982 by former US President Jimmy Carter. The Carter Center’s goal is to advance human rights and alleviate human suffering, including helping improve the quality of life for people in more than 80 countries.

The centre has many projects including election monitoring, supporting locally-led state-building and democratic institution-building in various countries, mediating conflicts between warring states, and intervening with Heads of States on behalf of victims of human rights abuses.

Grenada is scheduled to vote for a new government on 23 June 2022. Following nomination day on 1 June 2022, a total of 41 individuals put themselves up as candidates for the 15 constituencies. Only the ruling New National Party (NNP) and the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) were able to fill candidates for each constituency.

The Grenada Renaissance Party (GRP) nominated 3 candidates; the Independent Freedom Party (IFP) nominated 3 candidates; the Grenada United Labour Party (GULP) nominated 4 candidates and there was one independent candidate.

A total of 87,794 individuals are currently registered to cast their votes on election day.
