SGU Annual Career Day

St George’s University’s True Blue Campus was teeming with more than 1,400 secondary school students and young adults from all over the country on March 28, as they assembled for the 2015 SGU and Rotaract Club of Grenada (GRC) Career Day. The event attracted students seeking guidance on financing their higher education, how to prepare for interviews, and how to dress appropriately in the workplace.

As the host of Career Day, SGU provided a venue where students were able to obtain information on a variety of career paths, including both traditional and nontraditional employment opportunities.

“It is our vision that our young Grenadians are challenged to think beyond the status quo and gravitate towards emerging careers that will not only bring self-fulfillment but foster national development,” said Colin Dowe, Assistant Dean of Enrolment Planning.

Career Day highlighted a number of professions, including graphic design and information technology, culinary arts, tourism and hospitality management, music and audiovisual technology, as well as careers in the marine industry, biology, ecology and conservation. SGU and GRC published a Career Guide booklet that students can take home and refer to later that contains information on the pathways to the showcased careers.

A successful session in its inaugural year, SGU once again hosted the popular parent’s session led by Mr Dowe, which encouraged parents to provide more than just financial support for their children’s education.

“Now I’m realizing it just takes a little structure, a little guidance, and a little information because if you don’t have the information, you’re misguiding the children,” said Anne Bartholemew.

A second-year attendee of the Career Day parent’s session, Mavis McBurnie added, “I recommend this session to all the parents at my job. It is extremely useful and I encourage them all to take advantage of this opportunity.”
