Union Denies Pending Strike Action at Port

General Secretary of the Seamen and Waterfront Workers Union has denied a newspaper report which said that stevedores at the Port are planning to take industrial action over grievances with both the management and the union.

General Secretary of SWWU Lyle Samuel said that he has no idea what could have triggered such a report which he described as a fascinating story. “That story is completely false; at present we have no problem with our employer,” said Samuel whose union represents all stevedores at the Grenada Ports Authority.

The story claims that dozens of stevedores are expected put down their tools any time following what is called dissatisfaction with management and union in hearing their prolonged grievances and complaints.

Manager at the Port Authority Mr Ian Evans also expressed his shock at the story which was not only published locally but also on the website of the newspaper. “I am just surprised as many others to see this story — to the best of my knowledge we are not having problems with the Union which is the collective bargaining agent for the stevedores,” he said.
