The Ministry of Sports congratulates Kirani James on his outstanding and historic achievement in capturing gold in 400m at the 2014 Commonwealth Games currently underway in Glasgow, Scotland.
In a scintillating performance, James won the men’s 400m finals in a Games’ record time of 44.24 seconds. His victory also earned Grenada’s third medal in the history of the Games; the second medal being bronze won by Kurt Felix in the Men’s Decathlon (2014) and the first being silver by Alleyne Francique in the 400m (2006).
James, who is also the reigning Olympic champion, finished ahead of South African runner Wade van Niekerk (44.68s) who won the silver medal and Trinidadian LaLonde Gordon (44.78s) who won the bronze medal.
James’ win came fast on the heels of Kurt Felix’s first international medal in the decathlon for Grenada.
Both athletes’ achievements serve to further cement Grenada’s position and steady growth in athletics on the World stage and continues to lift the standards of sports in Grenada. This also reminds us of the impressive cadre of young athletes emerging from our small island.
