NATIONAL DISASTER MANAGEMENT AGENCY (NaDMA)
PRESS RELEASE

St. George’s, Grenada – 26 September 2016

The National Disaster Management Agency (NaDMA) continues to monitor the tropical wave referred to as 97L, an area of low pressure located about 1,100 miles East-Southeast of the Windward Islands. The system continues to show signs of organization.

According to the latest information released from the Meteorological Office at the Maurice Bishop International Airport, environmental conditions are expected to be conducive for development, and a tropical depression is likely to form around mid-week while the system moves westward to west-northwestward at 15 to 20 mph.

The Met Office is advising that interests in the eastern and central Caribbean Sea, including the northern coast of South America, monitor the progress of this system.

Regardless of development, heavy rains and strong gusty winds should spread over the Windward Islands and portions of the southern Lesser Antilles beginning late Tuesday or Wednesday.* Formation chance through 48 hours is medium with a 60% chance, while formation chance through 5 days is high at 90%.

Please be guarded against unofficial information from social and other media which tend to create undue panic. The nation can rest assured that NaDMA is in constant contact with the Meteorological Office, and will continue to monitor this system and provide updates as soon as they become available.

NaDMA is the official source of all disaster-related information and will continue to monitor this situation as long as is necessary. Please continue to monitor the radio and television stations for additional updates.

For addition information, please contact the National Disaster Management Agency (NaDMA) on 440-8390-4 & 440-0838, or email [email protected].
