The Grenadian community in Canada, including diplomat representatives in Toronto and Montreal, is trying to raise funds in support of Cultural Ambassador and former Calypso Monarch, Edson ‘Ajamu’ Mitchell.
One of the scheduled fundraisers, organized by The Grenada Day Cultural Association and Spice Isle Association, is a ‘Fish Friday’ on 22 September.
The funds will help offset Ajamu’s Toronto hospital medical expenses of more than CAD$5,000.
The trustees assigned to oversee the collection and disbursement of funds are Ambassador Derrick James, Consul General in Toronto; and Honorary Deputy Consul in Montreal, Theodore H Blaize.
Ajamu, arguably Grenada’s most versatile entertainer, is rehabilitating in the United States after falling ill, following his arrival in Canada to perform last month in Toronto. He has been diagnosed with what doctors describe as a severe case of the Zika virus infection.
Ajamu was admitted 3 times to a Toronto hospital and was unable to fulfil his schedule engagement at the 10th annual Grenada Day festival on 20 August. Eventually, he was flown to Virginia to receive further treatment, including therapy to regain strength in his legs.
Ajamu performed at Spicemas 2016, including participating in the Dimanche Gras show, 7 August, at the National Stadium. He was the defending Calypso Monarch entering the competition, but lost the crown to Scholar.
