Members of Boca Secondary School and the community of Boca are eagerly anticipating the completion of a hard court being constructed next to the school and playing field. Community members joined representatives of Grenada Electricity Services Ltd. (GRENLEC), the Ministry of Education and the media for a site visit to the project, which will jointly benefit the school and the wider community.
The hard court project is a collaborative venture between Boca Secondary School, GRENLEC and the Government of Grenada. GRENLEC is underwriting the construction under its Community Partnership Initiative (GCPI), which prioritises community development, education and sport, amongst other initiatives.
During the brief gathering, Deputy Chief Officer of the Ministry of Education, Patricia Felix, commended GRENLEC for undertaking this initiative and thanked the various stakeholders for the part they are playing in this project. She also went on to note, “We at the Ministry of Education are looking forward to the results and improved performance of the students. I also implore the students and community members to take care of the facility and put it to the good use for which it is intended.”
Co-hosting the site visit, Interim Chief Executive Officer of GRENLEC, Clive Hosten noted, “Our Company continues to empower communities through our GRENLEC Community Partnership Initiative (GCPI) by working with them to realise their vision. We are delighted to acknowledge and thank our collaborators, particularly Boca Secondary School, which initiated this project. It is significant that the court will benefit the school, the entire Boca community and surrounding areas”.
Principal of the Boca Secondary School, Mr. Cephas Belfon, added his remarks stating, “Today I am particularly delighted that this dream has come to fruition. It will go a long way towards improving the students’ overall performance in various sporting activities and the physical education programme, as well as aid in preparation for competitions.” He also went on to thank GRENLEC, Marshall’s Bobcat for the clearing of the land, Barry’s Engineering and Ronney Thomas for the construction, and the Ministry of Agriculture (Lands and Surveys) for the lands granted to the school for the project.
The announcement of this exciting venture comes shortly after the Company’s presentation of over $135,000.00 to a number of care institutions, the Mt. Gay Mental Hospital and the Programme for Adolescent Mothers. GRENLEC was also a major contributor to the successful 2013 Carriacou Maroon and String Band Festival and the recently concluded Petit Martinique Regatta.
The Boca Hard Court Project is another shining example of the private and public sector partnership at work. The school community and residents are looking forward to its completion by the end of July.
