GRENADA DECLARES STATE OF EMMERGENCY
St. George, Grenada, June 25th, 2015
A state of emergency has been declared for Grenada and its dependencies as the country grapples with Hurricane Carmen.
From a severe weather alert earlier in the day Carmen has now become a category two (2) hurricane travelling at 19 mph with wind speeds of 97 miles per hour.
The National Emergency Advisory (NEAC) headed by Prime Minister Dr. the Rt. Hon Keith Mitchell met in an emergency session this morning at Nadma headquarters to deal with the situation. Several decisions were taken.
- A state of Emergency has been declared from 4 pm
- The National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) was activated at 1:30 pm
- District Emergency Operations Centers (DEOC) were activated at 2:00 pm
- Emergency shelters activated from 2 pm
- Curfew to be implemented from 5 pm
- Schools were closed from 12 noon
- Businesses were advised not to remain opened beyond 3 p.m.
- A Press conference was scheduled for 3 pm to provide an update on hurricane Carmen.
This is the first part of a two-day exercise entitled Operation Ready 2015 put on by Nadma to test its disaster preparedness especially during the hurricane season. Day two on Friday June 26 will see Mass Causality events in St Andrew and St George’s.
It’s all done with the aim of sensitizing the public of the importance of being prepared for hurricanes and other hazards.
NaDMA will issue advisories on the development of hurricane Carmen as changes occur.
