The Grenada National Cyber Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT-Gnd) has observed an increase in investment scams targeting Grenadians and other neighbouring islands through social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram.
These scams are showing up as sponsored posts or advertisements and are, in some cases, injected into legitimate content on the platforms.
An investment scam is a fake or misleading investment offer where someone lies or hides key facts to trick people into handing over money, usually by promising high returns with little or no risk.
The scammers behind these schemes often use financial or technological jargon that sounds sophisticated but, when examined closely, makes little or no real sense.
Common warning signs that an “investment opportunity” may be a scam:
- Unrealistic returns on investment. You are promised high returns in a very short time (for example, “Invest $100 and get $5,000 in 24–48 hours”)
- Downplayed risk. You are told there is no risk of losing your money, and that everyone who has “invested” has made a profit
- Guaranteed returns on your “investment.” You are told your payout is guaranteed and that there will not be any issues accessing your funds
- Moved to private messaging apps. You are moved from Facebook or Instagram to WhatsApp or Telegram, often under the pretext of “faster service” and may also be invited to join a Telegram group with “like-minded investors”
- High-pressure tactics. You are pressured or repeatedly hounded to make your “investment” and to send proof in the form of a screenshot
- Avoidance of voice contact. If you try calling the “agent” or “account manager” your calls are ignored or you are told that they can only communicate by message
- Lack of verifiable company information. The persons involved may be hesitant or unable to provide a valid website, physical address, business registration number, or proof that they are licensed or regulated to offer investment services
If you notice one or more of these signs, treat the offer as suspicious. Do not send money, do not share copies of your ID, and do not give anyone remote access to your phone or computer.
