The Ministry of Finance confirms that a minor fire occurred this morning at its interim administrative office located at the Galleria Mall, Grand Anse.
The incident began at approximately 9:45 a m, originating from the roof section above the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU). A maintenance crew conducting routine roofing work using a blowtorch inadvertently triggered a small fire due to a spark during the application process.
Thanks to the swift response of the workers on site, the fire was quickly contained. In accordance with established safety protocols, emergency services and Grenada Electricity Services Ltd., were immediately notified by the Galleria Mall’s management.
The Fire Department of the Royal Grenada Police Force promptly conducted a thorough assessment of both the affected area and the wider facility. Their evaluation confirmed that the building remains structurally sound and safe for continued occupancy. Clean-up operations are currently underway in the impacted areas.
Deputy Permanent Secretary for Administration David Anthony Hopkin noted that while the ministry has only recently occupied the facility, the incident presents a valuable opportunity to review and strengthen disaster mitigation procedures. He also highlighted the importance of refining safety protocols and commended the resilience and professionalism of staff, whose calm and cooperative response ensured minimal disruption.
The ministry assures the public that no injuries occurred, and all staff members, including those in the affected section, are safe and accounted for, with minimal water damage to at the FIU section of the facility. Services to clients and stakeholders have remained uninterrupted, and normal operations resumed by 11 am.
