World Ocean Day serves as a reminder of the vital connection between humans and the oceans that sustain life on Earth.

From vibrant coral reefs to the deep waters teeming with mysterious creatures, the ocean is a boundless source of beauty, inspiration, and resources. Celebrating this global event, communities worldwide come together to honour the ocean’s invaluable role and promote its conservation.

Everyone is invited to come to this year’s celebration on Saturday, 7 June at Grand Anse Beach in front of Umbrellas Restaurant to enjoy the festivities. Get Grenada Swimming, in collaboration with Diversity in Aquatics (DIA) and various local entities (including all the dive shops on the island), will offer a range of sea experiences for both children and adults. This complimentary event will provide information and activities related to scuba diving, snorkelling, sailing, marine biology, water safety, and other educational topics concerning the sea.

Activities will commence at 9 am with free swimming lessons available for individuals aged 4 years and older, including adults of all ages. At 10 am, various disciplines will be hosting at their designated tents and on the beach, offering informational stations and interactive activities on scuba diving, snorkelling, sailing, and marine biology. Additionally, there will be CPR/First Aid training, lifeguard demonstrations, sandcastle competitions, water games, races, and more.

Local debut author KayVal Andrew will launch “Winny and the Waves” at one of the tents. The story features a timid girl who learns to swim during Get Grenada Swimming’s National Learn to Swim Week, with engaging illustrations.

Deb Eastwood, Director of Get Grenada Swimming, acknowledges and is grateful for their partnership with Diversity in Aquatics (DIA) from Washington, DC, for this event. DIA aims to save lives by providing communities with access to quality aquatic opportunities. They initiated the aquatic festival idea in 2024. Last year, Thaddeus Gamory of DIA stated, “We had an amazing collaborative experience, supporting education in swimming, water safety, water sports, aquatic careers, scuba diving, marine science and conservation, and water wellness.”

We hope to see you Saturday! For more information, call 404-5237.
