  • Conception Lodge’s annual Black Tie Charity Ball is cornerstone of fundraising efforts
  • Funds also raised by direct contributions from members and supporters
  • Donation will be used by Pink Ribbon Society to support breast cancer patients, including laboratory fees, medications, ultrasounds, education, and counselling

The Pink Ribbon Society of Grenada, a non-profit aiding local cancer patients, received a generous donation from Conception Lodge #8346, a Friendly Society under the English Constitution.

Patrick Halout, Worshipful Master of Conception Lodge #8346, and several lodge members presented a $10,000 cheque to Raulda Chetram, President of the Pink Ribbon Society of Grenada, who was accompanied by cancer survivor Glenda Allan.

Chetram said the funds will be used to support the needs of breast cancer patients, including laboratory fees, medications, ultrasounds, education, and, in some cases, counselling. “Efforts are also being made to raise awareness about breast cancer and the importance of early screening. To a lesser extent, survivors have received assistance with travel expenses when treatment is not readily available in Grenada. Additionally, refreshments are provided twice a week at the Oncology Clinic in The General Hospital for patients who visit the facility for treatment or follow-ups,” Chetram explained.

Chetram underscored the need for continued assistance in the fight against cancer. “It must be noted that our society was established in April 2004 as a nonprofit organisation by 3 survivors. The society relies on donations from the public, business communities, and fundraisers. The society is in dire need of persons who are willing to assist in any way possible.”

Halout said that Freemasonry is built upon the principles of brotherly love, relief, and truth, and, as a lodge, they recognise the profound impact that cancer has on individuals, families, and communities, including some of its own members and their families being affected. “In recent times, we have personally felt this loss, with some of our own brethren mourning loved ones taken by cancer. Supporting the Pink Ribbon Society aligns with our commitment to relief, as it provides crucial support, education, and assistance to those battling breast cancer. This cause is close to our hearts, and we are honoured to contribute to the vital work they do.”

The fraternity, known for its charitable endeavours, raised funds during its recent annual Black Tie Gala. This event, organised by the lodge’s committee, is one of the high-profile gatherings on the social Masonic calendar, held in October last year. The Black Tie Gala brings together lodges from various constitutions and members of the business community to help raise money for community support.

Halout explained that funds are raised through various methods, including ticket sales, auctions, raffles, and direct contributions from both members and supporters. “Our annual Black Tie Charity Ball serves as the cornerstone of our fundraising efforts. This event brings together brethren, friends, and supporters in a spirit of unity and generosity. Funds are raised through various means, including ticket sales, auctions, raffles, and direct contributions from both members and well-wishers. Every contribution, no matter how small, plays a significant role in making a difference. Our guiding principle is that charity extends beyond financial aid — it is about uplifting those in need and standing in solidarity with our community,” Halout said.

Conception Lodge has been consistently at the helm of transformation at the Father Mallaghan Home for Boys through their activity participation with the orphanage to support the well-being of its young residents.

“Our support includes the provision of school books, Christmas toy distributions, clothing, personal essentials, and educational scholarships, ensuring these boys have the resources to build a brighter future. Additionally, we have contributed to their sustainability efforts by donating baby chickens and feed, promoting self-sufficiency and agricultural learning. Beyond this, we extend our charitable reach to disaster relief, local hospices, and community outreach initiatives. Through financial donations, volunteer work, and advocacy, we uphold the Masonic principle of relief, demonstrating that service to others is at the heart of our fraternity,” Halout explained.

Already, the Friendly Society has identified its next charitable initiative, which is supporting the New Life Organisation’s (NEWLO) Small Tools Programme, which promotes vocational training and skills development for young people.

“We have already reached out to the management of NEWLO and have priced the necessary tools in anticipation of our contribution,” Halout said. “In addition to this, we have compiled a list of other organisations that we aim to support, with our final selections depending on the funds raised. Our approach remains thoughtful and deliberate, ensuring that our contributions align with our Masonic principles of charity and relief while maximising the positive impact on the community,” Halout said.

Despite their laudable charity efforts and community outreach, societies around the world have sought to paint freemasonry in a negative light. However, Conception Lodge, through guidance from The United Grand Lodge of England, has taken significant steps to demystify Freemasonry and modernise their approach, particularly through the use of social media.

Halout stated these efforts have produced positive results and strengthened connections with the communities they serve. “We are seeing positive results. By sharing the charitable work we do and engaging more openly with the public, we have fostered a greater appreciation for what Freemasonry truly represents — a fraternity that cultivates personal growth, promotes ethical conduct, and actively supports those in need,” he said. “This approach has resonated strongly, especially with young men who see the impact of our charitable efforts and are inspired to learn more. We have received numerous messages from individuals expressing their interest in joining, demonstrating that transparency and outreach enhance public understanding.”

Halout said the lodge is open to future engagement with the community. “Those interested in learning more or considering membership are encouraged to contact a Freemason they know or contact their local lodge for guidance. Our goal is not just to be understood but also to make a tangible difference in society. Through our actions, we continue to uphold the timeless Masonic principles of brotherly love, relief, and truth while ensuring that our fraternity remains relevant and accessible in the modern world.”
