- Change to Labour Code first mentioned during 10 December sitting of Upper House

Labour Minister Claudette Joseph has announced that, during the first quarter of 2025, Government will seek Parliament’s approval for substantial amendments to the Labour Code. These changes will include an expansion of maternity leave and the introduction of paternity leave.
“For workers, we will see in the first quarter of 2025 the coming into effect of substantial amendments to the Labour Code. We talked about it as something we want to complete in 2024 but we are almost there,” said Joseph, who explained that the Cabinet should be approving the new policy within the first 2 weeks of 2025.
“And then we will then move to have the legislation perfected and presented and that will bring into effect substantial amendment to the dispute resolution aspect of the Labour Code,” she disclosed in an end-of-year interview with the Government Information Service (GIS).
“We took our time and did our analysis with the help of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and friendly Caribbean governments, and we have come up with a mechanism we think that stakeholders will appreciate,” she said. Joseph is a senator in the Upper House of Parliament and the Attorney General. “There will be some other great initiatives like paternity leave and an expansion of maternity leave and some other improvements to the labour code. All this is in aid of the a peaceful and harmonious industrial relations climate and to make sure that there is labour justice for all our workers.”
Joseph first mentioned the change to the Labour Code during the 10 December 2024 sitting of the Upper House. In her ministerial statement, she said that it was Government’s intention to have the review done in 2024 but that date had to be changed because the Ministry of Labour intended to conduct consultations with the various stakeholders before the amendment was presented to Parliament.
