The Environment Division in the Ministry of Climate Resilience, the Environment, and Renewable Energy has embarked on a comprehensive review of Grenada’s National Environmental Management Strategy and draft legislation.
This critical initiative, supported by the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), is part of Grenada’s commitment to environmental sustainability, as outlined in the St George’s Declaration principles.
Originally developed in 2005, the strategy is being updated nearly 2 decades later to address emerging environmental challenges and align with modern sustainability goals. The draft legislation is also undergoing enhancements to ensure its effectiveness in safeguarding Grenada’s natural resources.
Speaking on the importance of the review, Head of the Environment Division Aria St Louis, stated, “We are focused on ensuring that Grenada’s environment is managed effectively to support sustainable development and address critical areas such as plastic pollution, marine and coastal management, and energy management.”
Community consultations will also form a key part of this process, allowing residents to voice their concerns and provide input on issues like green space management — a priority area for the Minister for Climate Resilience Hon. Kerryne James.
These updates represent Grenada’s proactive stance in addressing environmental issues and ensuring a sustainable future for its citizens.
