The Consumer Affairs Office proudly joins the global community in celebrating World Consumer Rights Day on 15 March 2026, while also commemorating 2 years since the department officially opened its doors on 15 March 2024.
To mark this milestone, the office will focus on educating, engaging and empowering both consumers and businesses from 9–15 March. Activities such as production site visits, surveillance visits and a public engagement event are planned as part of the office’s ongoing commitment to protecting consumer interests and strengthening confidence in the marketplace.
This year’s observance is being held under the global theme, “Safe products, Confident Consumers,” a theme that highlights the need for stronger product safety and greater consumer confidence worldwide. The campaign underscores that access to safe reliable goods and services is a fundamental consumer right and a cornerstone to fair, thriving markets.
Director of Consumer Affairs Merlyn Horsford-Williams stated, “As we celebrate 2 years of serving the public, World Consumer Rights Day 2026 calls on sectors of society to prioritise consumer safety and trust. Product safety is not only a regulatory obligation, but also a moral commitment to protect lives and livelihoods. Together, through awareness and responsible practices, we can build markets where consumers feel confident and protected.”
The office reminds the public that the Consumer Protection Act exists to safeguard consumers against unfair trading practices, unsafe goods, and misleading information, while also outlining the obligations of businesses to operate responsibly and ethically.
Businesses are encouraged to:
- Ensure that products placed on the market are safe and compliant with established standards
- Provide clear, accurate and truthful information to consumers
- Respect consumer rights related to refunds, exchanges and fair treatment
Consumers, in turn, are urged to:
- Read product labels carefully and check expiration dates before purchase
- Ask questions and seek information when in doubt
- Report unsafe products or unsafe business practices to the department.
