The Customs and Excise Division of the Ministry of Finance announces the official rollout of the 2025 Free Barrel Initiative, which will run from 8 December 2025 to 6 January 2026.
This seasonal concession is part of Government’s ongoing efforts to ease the financial burden on families during the Christmas period and to support citizens at home and abroad who contribute to household well-being.
For the duration of the initiative, 100% exemption from import duties, taxes, and the Customs Service Charge will be granted on approved items imported in barrels, boxes, or crates. Eligible commodities include food supplies, clothing, toiletries, household cleaning items, linen and bedding, sanitary products for adults and children, and small household appliances. The Division further informs the public that:
- Only barrels containing personal effects qualify for relief under the initiative
- Exemptions apply to barrels cleared on or after 8 December 2025, and shipped on or before 5 January 2026
- Each household is permitted a maximum of 2 barrels. All additional barrels will be subject to normal duties and taxes
- Stamp duties and port charges are not waived and remain payable
- Importers must present one valid government-issued ID, which may include a Driver’s License, Passport, Voter’s Registration Card, or NIS Card
- Importers must collect a Declaration Form from their shipping agent, complete it fully, and submit it to Customs when presenting themselves to clear their barrel
- The valuation of items is necessary, therefore, invoices and all supporting documentation must be presented at the time of clearance
The Division encourages all importers to adhere to these procedures to ensure timely and efficient service throughout the holiday season.
The Customs and Excise Division reminds the public that false declarations are a serious offence under the law and may result in penalties, fines, or seizure of goods. For further information, members of the public are invited to contact the Customs and Excise Division, Ministry of Finance.
