The Grenada Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) benefits from the World Aquatics Age Group Swim Coach certification programme.
Assistant Coach to Grenada’s 2025 OECS Champion team Valorie Andrew is currently in Hungary to participate in this hybrid programme. Participants from across the globe have been individually selected to engage in a rigorous and comprehensive certification programme through 20 hours of e-learning on World Aquatic’s e-learning platform, and 5 days of face-to-face, in-person sessions in Budapest. Andrew is at present engaged in the programme in Budapest, after departing Grenada last Saturday, 22 November 2025.
The course, which is targeted to dedicated coaches who work with age groups across the developmental levels, 8–12, 12–17, and 17 and above, focuses on a comprehensive set of competencies, among them: Integrity and Safe Sport, Sport Psychology and Mental Wellbeing, Strokes and Skills, Gender Differences, Nutrition and Hydration, Strength and Conditioning, Long-Term Athlete Development, Sports Science, Roles and Responsibilities, Practical Coaching, and Planning and Periodisation.
The 5-day in-person sessions will engage trainees in interactive classroom workshops and practical coaching sessions, of which participants must complete all sessions and pass an online exam and practical assessments to become certified. The certification programme supports GASA’s strategic development plan to strengthen the coaching capacity to enhance the development of our swim athletes. Upon Andrew’s return, we expect her to share her experience with other local coaches to enhance the overall coaching experience.
