- Public to provide comments on updated standards from 6 October to 5 December 2025
- Current standards have been in existence for many years
- Draft standards will replace mandatory standards which already exist for these products
The Grenada Bureau of Standards is in the final stage of establishing national standards for toilet tissue and hollow blocks. This stage requires the public to provide comments on the updated standards from 6 October to 5 December 2025.
The draft standards will replace the existing mandatory standards for these products. In the case of toilet tissue, it shall be manufactured from virgin, chemical and mechanical pulp or secondary fibres from the same pulp or a mixture of both from recycled paper. “The tissue shall be unglazed, soft, flexible and of even formation,” said the general requirement, which also said that the tissue shall be free from visible wood splinters, specks, breaks, holes, wrinkles and other imperfections.
As for the hollow blocks, the new standards are in line with the updated building code. Among the general requirements, all blocks shall be stored until they reach the required strength before being dispatched by the manufacturer. “Curing determines the rate and magnitude of hydration of Portland cement,” said the standard, which points out that the Bureau of Standards reserves the right to carry out independent sampling of hollow blocks.
Amiesha Persaud, head of standardisation and the Grenada Bureau of Standards, explained that the current standards have been in existence for many years, and during that period, there have been several changes to the international standard for some of these products. “Therefore, updating the standards nationally is ensuring that we are in line with international standards for these products,” she said, explaining that stakeholders such as manufacturers were part of the committee which reviewed and assessed the process for adopting the new standards.
The relevant draft standards and comment forms can be found on the bureau’s social media pages. Comments should be submitted electronically or sent to the Director on or before 5 December, via the email [email protected].
