The Government of Grenada, through the Ministry of Sports in collaboration with the Grenada Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) held the sod turning ceremony for the National Aquatic Centre on Wednesday, 17 September 2025 at the National Stadium.

A 25-metre competition pool will be established at the National Stadium grounds, complementing the already established cricket, football and athletic facilities. The establishment of an Aquatic Centre is a dream finally coming to reality for swimming in Grenada.

At the groundbreaking ceremony at the National Stadium, Vice President of GASA Gail Purcell shared the swimming fraternity’s journey spanning generations of swimmers and administrators that has culminated in this historic groundbreaking activity. In attendance to mark the significant occasion was the visiting Vice President of World Aquatic, Maureen Croes. She highlighted in her remarks, “This 25-metre pool facility will meet World Aquatic competition standard capable of hosting local, regional and international events.”

Minister of Sport Delma Thomas indicated that we are witnessing the start of the first phase of the Aquatic Centre with the installation of the pool, which will be followed by phase two, the pavilion and supporting facilities for the pool. While acknowledging the contribution of the many partners who have contributed to the realisation of the aquatic facility, Minister Thomas noted, the facility is about transforming lives, while stating, “Every medal we dream of at CARIFTA, every representation on an Olympic stage, every child who will learn to swim safely will begin here.”

Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell lauded the swimming fraternity for their passion and commitment to the development of the sport.

Barry’s Engineering has been named as the local contractor for the foundation works. The pool will be manufactured and installed by Myrtha Pools, a world-renowned provider of public and private pool facilities.

Great to have an aquatic center at last. But why not 50m pool which would provide our swimmers better training for international events?
