As part of the Southern St George Water Supply Expansion Project (UKCIF Project), Consolidated Contractors Company Caribbean Inc. (CCCCI) is supporting significant community benefits through its commitment to investing in the empowerment of community members within the project sites.
CCCCI is engaged in the Lot 1 construction work of the UKCIF Project, which includes construction activities in Concord and Molinere. This construction activity has become a catalyst for local employment and empowerment. Recognising a pressing need for greater gender inclusion and youth employment in the construction sector, CCCCI makes it a priority to recruit persons directly from Project communities. According to Nelson Louison, Managing Director of CCCCI, “the response for employment under the UKCIF Project was overwhelming, revealing a strong willingness among the residents to contribute to their community development, even if they lacked formal qualifications in the construction field.”
In a pioneering move, CCCCI is addressing an identified construction skills gap head-on. The company has implemented a comprehensive on-the-job training programme, led by its team of experienced regional and international staff. This initiative is designed to expose local recruits to global best practices in construction, providing them with the skills and confidence needed to build a sustainable career. The programme goes beyond simple task-oriented instruction, focusing on a holistic approach that includes safety protocols, project management, and construction quality control. By immersing new team members in a professional construction environment, CCCCI is not just offering a temporary job but is laying the groundwork for a future where these individuals can thrive and become leaders in their own right.
“We believe that the construction industry can be a powerful engine for social progress,” said Louison. “By providing training and job opportunities, we’re not just improving the water infrastructure; we’re investing in people to support empowered and resilient communities. We’re creating a pathway for economic independence, promoting gender equality, and empowering our youth.” Louison further explained that the company’s approach is critical for the holistic and long-term development of Grenada. He noted that while many young men and women in rural areas are eager to enter the workforce, they often face high unemployment due to the lack of companies willing or able to provide the necessary job training and professional development.
This initiative is a direct response to a major challenge in rural communities: the lack of accessible job training. CCCCI’s proactive approach, including local job-recruitment fairs, demonstrates its commitment to closing this gap and creating a more inclusive and equitable workforce. Louison indicated that CCCCI promotes multi-stakeholder collaboration with government, private sector and civil society to ensure that these efforts are scalable and sustainable, creating a ripple effect that benefits not just the project participants but the wider community as well.
