Each crop needs specific nutrients to grow and thrive. That’s why Smart Agricultural Practices, also known as Companion Planting, encourages farmers to grow crops side by side so they can share and replenish nutrients in the soil.
In this system, one plant releases nutrients that another needs, creating a natural cycle of support. Once continuously implemented, the farmer can reap higher yields due to a healthier soil without having to use synthetic fertilisers.
In the Grenada Food and Nutrition Council’s (GFNC) latest educational segment entitled “Yes, We Should Grow Different Crops Together,” Extension Officer Marcia Lord shares examples of crops that grow well alongside corn and other plants. The series aims to encourage the public to eat local while strengthening food and nutrition security. According to Extension Officer Lord, the Ministry of Agriculture is actively promoting this method. “It’s healthy for the soil. The soil’s health will improve, and you will get maximum yield,” she explained.
