The British High Commission in St George’s in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports hosted a Commonwealth Cricket Competition on Friday, 16 May at the Morne Rouge Playing Field in St George.

The teams comprised the best cricket players within primary schools across the country who proudly represented their parish. This gender-inclusive activity ensured that there were at least 2 girls on each team. The teams went up against each other in 10-over matches with an attempt to qualify for the finals. St Andrew and St David won their respective semifinal matches and moved on to the finals, where St David emerged victorious.

The activity was aimed at providing an opportunity to showcase and improve the skills of young and upcoming cricketers throughout Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique. Additionally, physical activities such as cricket help promote a healthy lifestyle (where increasing levels of non-communicable diseases exist) and help promote sport and teamwork generally.

To support ongoing training and development of skills, the British High Commission also donated cricket kits to each of the participating teams. Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon Delma Thomas joined Resident British Commissioner Victor Clark to hand over the kits. The game of cricket remains one of the most loved and popular games played among Commonwealth member states, and the High Commission is committed to supporting it wherever possible.

Clark said, “What better way to celebrate our friendship as Commonwealth partners than through our shared passions for cricket. Although this event was delayed from Commonwealth Day, cricket epitomises some of the values we share among the 56 Commonwealth nations: fair play, respect, integrity and equality. It was great to see so many young Grenadians having fun and making new friends across the parishes.”
