The Grenada Paralympic Committee has donated a new table tennis board, net and rackets to the Grenville School for Special Education.
At a short ceremony at the school, Assistant Secretary of the Paralympic Committee Anthony Antoine presented the table and equipment to schoolteacher Jumaar Bain. On behalf of the principal, staff and students he thanked the Paralympic Committee and assured them that the sport would be a part of the students’ athletics programme.
President of the Paralympic Committee Ray Roberts, who attended the ceremony, told the teachers and students that the equipment was funded by a grant from the International Paralympics Committee, and it’s an initiative to encourage para-table tennis. According to Roberts, the objective is to develop and encourage Special Ed students and the physically challenged to be active participants in recreational and competitive para-table tennis. A former national table tennis player himself, Roberts impressed upon the teachers and students that table tennis is a wonderful family sport and recreation, urging them to have patience and learn the basics. He said with that approach he is confident that Grenville Special Ed will be a leader in producing para-players to represent Grenada in the coming years.
Physical education teacher Jumaar Bain said table tennis was part of his studies at Teachers’ College (now T A Marryshow Community College —TAMCC), and will take up the challenge to teach the students the game.
The Grenada Paralympic Committee said in the new year, it plans to work with the Ministry of Sports and the Grenada Table Tennis Association to have their coaches and mentors assist in coaching para-table tennis. Para-table tennis is a competitive sport in all the major Paralympic events globally.
