For those who prefer the convenience of buying lunch rather than preparing meals at home, be mindful of your choices.
Many restaurants and fast-food outlets add large servings of carbohydrates, like rice and potato salad or rice and macaroni pie, to make customers feel they are getting more value for their money. While this may seem appealing, it often leads to overeating carbohydrates. Lean in on the GFNC One Carb Per Meal Campaign, when buying lunch; ask for only one carbohydrate.
The Grenada Food and Nutrition Council recommends buying portions instead of pre-set meals. Regularly consuming meals with 2 large carbohydrate servings — especially if your job is not physically demanding — can contribute to weight gain and increase the risk of diet-related chronic non-communicable diseases, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease.
Research indicates that increasing portion sizes can boost energy intake by an average of 35%. When meals are served as a single unit or plate, many people consume everything without realising they have surpassed their caloric needs. This phenomenon is known as “unit bias.” You can avoid these hidden risks by choosing your own portions while enjoying a balanced and satisfying meal.
By prioritising establishments that allow portion selection and creating balanced plates, you can enjoy delicious meals while caring for your long-term health. Take control of your meals today: choose portions instead of meals and make every dining experience a step toward a healthier you.
