The Grenada Solid Waste Management Authority (GSWMA) takes seriously any attempt by unauthorised persons to enter its temporary debris storage facilities in Carriacou or Petite Martinique to engage in activity that can result in damage to property, assets, and equipment or injury to personnel at these locations.

The apparent attempt over the weekend to destroy material contained at the GSWMA Primary Debris Storage facility in Harvey Vale, Carriacou, by fire has resulted in the authority taking the necessary measures to step up security and surveillance operations at the affected facility and all other sites including Hillsborough Playing Field, Mt Pleasant Playing Field, Dover school yard and the 2 temporary storage sites in Petite Martinique.

The management of the GSWMA was informed of a fire at the Harvey Vale Primary Processing Facility in the early hours of Sunday morning and alerted the Royal Grenada Police Force. The fire department responded with the deployment of the Lauriston Airport Fire Unit and personnel to get the fire under control. The GSWMA also secured the services of a local equipment company to provide an excavator to assist the fire service in accessing the burning waste to be extinguished.

GSWMA personnel in Carriacou reported that as of midday on Monday, the fire was contained to a small area used for the storage of discarded lumber and that the smoke had subsided significantly.

The Harvey Vale Temporary Debris storage site, which is located at the Harvey Vale Playing Field, is used as the primary processing facility for waste to be brought in from the other 3 storage facilities in Carriacou and 2 in Petite Martinique to be processed and shipped off island for recycling under the Project Pristine Initiative.

Investigations into the fire and attempts to obstruct the movement of vehicular traffic to access the site are being conducted by the Royal Grenada Police Force.
