Grenada stands to benefit from the first China-Latin America and Caribbean Development Forum which was held in Beijing from 12–14 September 2024, where representatives from Latin American countries and international organisations discussed key regional issues which focused on enhancing cooperation through academic exchanges on trade, investment, innovation, and global governance.
As outlined in the forum’s modernisation focus, Grenada benefitted from a valuable exchange of knowledge as well as access to best practices and cutting-edge strategies that will bolster its efforts at sustainable development, enhance its efforts at climate adaptation, and advance green energy solutions. All of these will strengthen the country’s efforts at climate resilience, energy security, and environmental protection.
Minister Lennox Andrews, Minster for Economic Development, Planning, Agriculture and Lands, Forestry, Marine Resources, and Cooperatives represented Grenada at the forum.
Gao Xiang, President of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, highlighted that this year marks a decade of China-Latin America partnership, emphasising significant progress and new opportunities for collaboration. Klemes Endara, Permanent Secretary of the Latin American Economic System, stresses the importance of diversifying bilateral relations and working together in areas such as e-commerce, the digital economy, and climate change.
Qiu Xiaoqi, China’s Special Representative for Latin American Affairs, underscored the Belt and Road Initiative’s role in aligning development strategies between China and the region. He calls for continued research and cooperation to strengthen industrial ties and counter protectionism.
Furthermore, academic collaborations and think tank exchanges will provide Grenada’s institutions and professionals with valuable expertise in innovation and modernisation. These partnerships will help advance key sectors such as education, infrastructure, and governance, equipping Grenada with the tools to address developmental challenges more effectively.
This holistic approach not only strengthens the nation’s capacity for growth but also ensures longterm environmental sustainability and economic resilience.
