“Everyone in Action for Climate Change Adaptation” is the slogan for Grenada’s National Adaptation Plan revision process. The theme suggests a call to collective and inclusive action aimed at addressing and managing the impacts of climate change. Every individual, community, and sector have a role to play in adapting to climate variations through proactive measures.
Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique is stepping up its game against climate change with a revamped National Adaptation Plan (NAP) for 2025 to 2030. This plan, a cornerstone of the island’s strategy, is coordinated by the Ministry of Climate Resilience, The Environment, and Renewable Energy and supported and funded by the NAP Global Network and the International Institute of Sustainable Development.
The updated NAP zeroes in on vital areas like securing clean, fresh water, boosting food production, and protecting our unique ecosystems in the face of climate change. It envisions fields of drought-resistant crops and enhanced water conservation measures like increased rainwater harvesting systems and desalination units, ensuring that even in dry spells, our taps and fields don’t run dry. The plan is also meant to strengthen our coastlines with natural defenses like mangroves, crucial for buffering storm surges and preserving marine life.
To really bring these plans to life, the Ministry is hosting a series of community talks across the island. Dubbed “Everyone in Action for Climate Change Adaptation,” these gatherings are a chance for the public to share how climate change is affecting your community and discuss local strategies for resilience. It’s a unique opportunity to connect with experts, learn more about the NAP’s initiatives, and see how you can get involved.
Here’s when and where you can join these conversations:
- Monday, 9 September: At Mt Craven Community Center in St Patrick
- Wednesday, 11 September: At Grenville Secondary School in St Andrew
- Thursday, 12 September: At the Anglican School in Gouyave, serving St John and St. Mark
- Monday, 16 September: At The Canal in St David
- Tuesday, 17 September: At Boca Secondary School in St George
- Friday, 20 September: We’ll wrap up in Carriacou at the Mermaid Hotel
Together, we can turn the tide against climate change, ensuring a resilient Grenada for today and a thriving tomorrow for future generations.
